  • rotax 717

I just purchased a used 1996 Sea Doo Speedster with twin Rotax 717 engines. The boat is in reasonably good condition and will not take much to put in like new condition.

However, the engines are another matter. The port engine has major problems and needs a lot of attention (verdict still out on the starboard engine).

The port engine is turning over well but the oil coming out of the sparkplug holes can only be called a gusher (one worse than the other). I am told the rotary valve seals need to be replaced, which will require a complete disassembly and replacement of the crankshaft since there are 2 seals on the crank which are the seals that have gone bad.

I am up to the challange, but dread the tool costs to do this. But can anyone give me some words of advice. I am not certain repairing this engine is the best course of action and if the information given to me is correct or not. The problem is that I will only find this out when the engine has been disassmbled and the manuals do not say anything about this problem.

    Any suggestions welcome.

The diagnosis is correct. The easier solution is to swap the block.

Thank you for the confirmation. And looking at the price of a rebuilt long block it appears cost effective and a great time saver overall.

The starboard engine was cranked with a compression tester and one cylinder is producing about 272 psi (checking it another time produced almost 300 psi). The other cylinder is not cranking more than about 4 times and producing about 150 psi. However, it seems to be getting more oil than the other cylinder and the starter cannot continue to crank the engine.

I suspect this engine could have rotary valve seal problems also, but the amount of oil is much less than the port engine.

Can you give me your opinion on this engine also.

150 is normal, but if you have any excessive fluids, the reading is meanignless - as with the other cyliner. You definitley have fluid in there with those readings.

This is a VERY common problem during extended periods of storage.
