  • 98 challenger 1800 engine replacement

OK so I bought the boat, and third time out the port side engine blew. So I found out about SBT and ordered a new motor. I installed about 85% of the motor and then took it to a shop to have it double checked and finished up, along with servicing the other motor. After cleaning up the carbs and double checking everything, the mechanic could not get the new motor to fire up. He said it is back firing through the carbs. He double checked the valve timing and that is OK. He said it might be the flywheel timing and that the engine would have to be completely removed to adjust. I had them stop at this point since I am already out a significant amount of $ and wanted to get some second opinions before I let them yank it back out.

Any ideas? What might cause the motor to back fire through the carbs? Motor is turning over and getting fuel.

    Any help would be great.

It does not require pulling the engine to check, just the front cover.
