  • Starter Drive assembly (SDA) won't engage Flywheel

    Hello all...

I am new to this forum and I have an issue with my Rotax 947 Starter Drive Assembly. I have a 2004 Seadoo Sportster LE DI jet boat - and like I said it is a 947 2 stroke engine model. It's a long story however water got through the magneto cover and rusted a little bit, however all the teeth on the flywheel and starter drive assembly (SDA) are AOK. It's all cleaned an lubed however, I have the magneto cover off and when I hit the start the SDA spins fast as heck but will not engage the flywheel. I have full charge and I have swapped out batteries so I know it's not that. Everything has been cleared of corrosion and lubed up. I can pull the SDA forward very easily so I know it's not stuck or corroded. I guess I need to know if there is some kind of solenoid that I dont' know about that may not be working which engages or "pushes" the SDA toward the flywheel so that it spins it. And if it's centrifugal force.... well the laws of physics have deserted this engine.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated. I'm at my whits end! I have searched all forums.... my service manual and everything. Cannot find any solution to this problem. Maybe if I knew what engages the SDA I could trouble shoot. Can anyone shed some light?

    Many Thanks
    Nick

PS: Some people call the SDA the "bendix" or the "clutch". I know bombardier calls it the Starter Drive Assembly (SDA). So I hope everyone knows what I'm talking about

I think you just need to buy a new starter drive assembly, as there are pieces and weight plates inside of it that throw the unit out as it spins. There are no solenoids or anything like that. It throws because of centrifical forces.

If you call me, Ill sell you a brand new oem starter drive for $125.00
