  • Speedster 717/720 Engine stalling

I got my boat out Monday, for the first time.

It ran fine, for most of the day. Whenever I would throttle down to slow or stop, the right (starboard) engine would stall. I figured it would flood or something. It would restart in a minute or so, and ran fine with the RPMs up.

Towards the end of the day, it started ticking (maybe more like popping), and then stall. Running fine then tick..tick..tick.. then nothing. This happened while under power at about 4000 RPMs. It started it again and it ticked a few times, then died. I just put it back on the trailer using the good engine and called it a day.

I am not sure what the problem would be. I just put new plugs in yesterday, and the port engine ran great all day.

Was it more like an engine rod knocking or popping and sputtering like an engine misfire? You might have fouled a plug if it was last year's gas in it, thats possible.....its this ticking sound you have me worried about, is it like a metal on metal sound?? Also, did you put in the correct model plugs?

Looks like both of us are new posters and new to the site...LOL!!

It wasn't a ticking (like valves with low oil) but I guess like a misfire. The engine was running (I don't know the RPMs, I would say 4500) and on top of the engine running wa a pup...pup...pup kinda noise. I don't think it was metallic so much.

It had very little old gas in it (I don't know how much since my gauge is broken), but I would say about 5 gallons, and I added 20 gallons of fresh petrol and a can of Sea Foam.

I thought it may be gas, but one engine was running fine, and this occured 2 hours into the run (the noise, not the stalling, which happened from the onset).

The old plugs (all 4) were kinda black, meaning a rich condition, right? I could take some pictures if necessary. I replaced them with the NGK BR8ES.

Oh yeah, the right engine compression measured 140 inboard, 135 on the pto side. the other measured 142/140.

        Re: Speedster 717/720 Engine stalling

The shop finally called back. They said I had a bad stator in the motor, which is messing up the electrical system and causing the motor to run poorly.

        Now they want 8 hours * $70/hour + $400 for part to repair,or ~ $1200

When I did the test run with the guy that sold it, we ran it for about an hour, but apparently it takes longer for the problem to show (after charging the battery. I can try to contact the seller, but it has been 2 weeks, so I don't know what I can do. There is really no way to prove he was aware of the problem.

Is this something I can do myself, or does it require specialized tools and such?

Man thats a bunch of cash for that job. Either take it to another mechanic or get a repair manual and do it yourself. In my honest opinion.............thats a rip off for that repair.

I have the repair manual, it looks like onlione the parts are about $250. Then there are some flywheel pulling tools and such. That is assuming it is the one part I looked up.

Did they actually test the stator? Or do you just need a rectifier? The difference in price is huge.

I was told they tested the stator. I was told it was supposed to measure 56 ohms max or something, and mine was 600 ohms.
