  • '99 GTI hard cold engine start

Hi. My question is regarding a hard (time and cranking effort needed) for a cold engine start and potential engine damage.

Just broke-in a new SBT 717 engine in my 1999 Seadoo GTI. Am using oil-injection block-off kit, new "on" fuel hose from filter, new "pulse" fuel hose to the engine block, rebuilt single carb, and new spark plugs after one tank of SBT break-in oil in fuel tank. After the engine is warm, it starts very easy and the engine runs perfect (runs about 45 mph per water speed gauge). After the engine cools down (say a couple of hours or overnight) it is hard to start.

It can be cold started by manually pulling the choke and cranking off/on for about 10-15 minutes with occassional break to depress throttle for fuel pump boost and with a few sputters until the fuel begins to flow well. If I pull a spark plug and add a teaspoon of fuel/oil then it will start within seconds from cold. Same is true if I remove covers and add fuel/oil to carb. I am concerned that it may score the rings fron dry cranking for 10-15 minutes without fuel/oil in the cylinder.

I bought the doo used and the previous owner told me that this was "normal" for a cold start. I read the Seadoo operators guide and it explains the above process but doesn't really provide a guideline on how long the process takes and if 10-15 minutes is 'normal'.

Is this normal? Will this cause damage? Is there an aftermarket primer bulb that would help? Could this be caused by a fuel leak somewhere (I have not conducted a pressure test)?

    Thanks in advance for advice!

The previous owner had no clue.

Yes you can damage the ngine, starter and battery that way.

he carbs were probably rebuilt improperly with too high of a pop-off. You can change it via larger needes or lighter springs, or install a primer kit.
