97 GTX 12 volt low & dead battery

I have a 97 gtx. Since the day I got this ski the 12 volt low flashes (when you plug in the laniard) but will start & run great (on a new or fully charged battery). If I leave the battery hooked up for any period of time (overnight) the battery goes dead. Charge the battery & the ski runs fine... I have been unhooking the positive side of the battery when I am not riding so its not being drained... It seems that the battery is charging while I ride - something is draining the battery when it's not being used? Any suggestions would be great.
