98 GTX LTD Ignition Coil

My Seadoo will not turn over at all. In my rear black electrical box there is a click in the ignition coil and that is all. (everytime I hit the start button) Item #4 on fische. If that part is shot would my engine turn over? I put a new starter in this year so I hope the he__ that is not it after the major pain that job was. There was smoke in my hood when the engine was turning over then I came back later to try to start it and nothing happened. I cooked something I just dont know what. My guess is something in the black box. The fuse is fine. Please help !!

If you are hearing a "click" when the start button is pressed, that is coming from your starter relay (number 16 on the fisch) in the same box. Your coil will not make any noise. It's common for the relays to go bad, especially if you have had to replace a starter in the past. The relay is a contactor switch that receives the 12v signal when the starter button is pushed and makes a high amp connection to the starter. Try to jump the two posts on the top of the relay with an old screwdriver or pair of pliers. If the starter turns over, then the contacts in the relay are bad. A simple fix for about $40. Be sure to replace the rubber seal gasket to the box and make sure the two lid tabs are on the outside of the seal. If not, you can get water inside the box and cause more problems.

Hi I tried contact with no luck. The click comes out of the ignition coil. I can feel the click with my finger on the coil when I hit the start button. If my starter is shot can it simply go without any type of turning. Can it simply die with no action just like that ?

There is nothing inside the ignition coil that would possible make a click or vibration. More than likely, you are feeling the electromagnet in the starter relay close because they are mounted right next to each other. Have you tried to jump the battery wire that connects on top of the relay yet? Take a volt meter or test light and connect the negative to the battery negative and unplug the starter relay. Place the meter positive lead or the test light point on the positive wire in the plug going to the relay and press the start button. At this point, you should have 12v or the test light will light and the click you heard before will be gone. Once you have done that test, plug the relay back up and then move the positive tester lead or test light point to the terminal on top of the relay that the starter wire is connected to. If your first test showed positive (12v to the relay when the start button was pushed) and you do not have 12v on the terminal going to the starter motor when you press the start button, your relay is bad. all so you could have a bad ground have you cleaned them if not you need too as this could be a ground issue too check the grounds at the coil the one on the battery the one on the starter and the one on the front of the engine by the stater good luck

BadBadDog is correct about a possible ground problem. If you test the starter system as described above and you are getting 12v at the starter wire post and the starter still does not work, you could have a ground problem. I have also seen the wire going from the relay to the starter become corroded or overheated at the starter end which will cause limited amperage to the starter. Check to see if it feels stiff or brittle.

Thanks guys. I had my engine completey out in the spring. I put a new bendix in and a new starter. (starter was not OEM) All wires were thoroughly clean including ground wires plus I added that gray plumbers anti corosion stuff to all connections. It is not the wiring. I am willing to bet it is the starter because I can jump start it at all. I tried a seperate battery directly to the positive lead to the starter and not a thing !!! This ticks me off because this is a huge job because Seadoo decides to put a starter under a rediculous huge and hard to line up pipe and under a carb as well. As I said earlier on there was smoke under the hood when I tried starting it. The next time there was nothing but a click. What else smokes under the hood ?
