  • JB Weld fixed my stripped PTO and shaft

OK. So if you read the title, your probly thinking.."Wow" or "that guys an idiot". Well either way, it works.

Anyway to make a long story short, I hit an iguana with my seadoo sportster, and ended up stripping out the driveshaft and PTO. The pin never snapped, and the pto and drive shaft stripped instead. I was like..**** I just spent $2000 rebuilding the engine (every single part in the compartment is new including the pump) I was not about to spend another $300 for a new driveshaft and PTO: so I took the pump off, cleaned out the grease from the PTO and filled it up with with JB weld instead. then I realigned the shaft and everything like you usually would, and bolted the pump back on- and yes- i put the rubber bumpers back on the shaft.

    Next day:

I hooked the boat upto the hose and let it run...PTO and shaft didnt slip a bit. Took the boat to the water, and it works like new. Actually there is less vibration than there was before- which seems odd- but i wont complain. The thing just purs at idle now. I was still sketical, so i put my 250lb friend on a tube and towed him around at full speed for a while, then hit the waves at high speed for a while- which i was sure would break the JB weld and leave me floating in the ocean aimlessly- but it didnt. i am so amazed that $4 fixed my boat. I am 18 BTW, and more or less BROKE..since i spent all my money getting my marine "junkyard project" to work..

    BUT:
Will the "fix" cause my engine to break.? I mean i used a whole tank of gas and had 3 people on the boat all day- mostly at high speed and no problems yet..

It will fail again, no doubt. it probably wont cause more damage though, except that you might snap the driveshaft (but you'll need a new one anyhow). hopefully, you left some play room in the spline area so there is some give with the motor and driveshaft.. Otherwise, you could damage your crank.

When you do end up re-doing this, buy used... people will usually sell PTO's for less than $30.. driveshafts go for around 100..

Oh yhea.. And as far as your first sentance goes.. I was thinking both. These things will always leave you stranded at the wrong time.. Think about it, your buddy gets hurt on the tube, you need to rush him to shore to get to an ambulance... Your patch job fails and now you are in the middle of the lake/bay/river/ocean, stranded... Bet you won't feel so "Wow" about your $4 repair job then.

These things take maintenance and repair. In order to be a responsible owner/operator they MUST have the boat running in top condition at all times, especially if you are carrying passengers. There is NO excuse for anything less.

hey I agree with Dsolie, cheap fixes will give you unwanted anger!!

however im not browbeating, im just saying, spend the money now, or pay for it
later. remember were talking about high horspower high rpms, little room for error. keep it by the book. (top side up) :beer

Re: JB Weld fixed my stripped PTO and shaft

JB weld has the strength of hardened silly putty. For whatever reason, the driveshaft is now locked up inside the pto splines.
The whole idea of crowned splines on a driveshaft is to have a flexable connection that "floats" inside the impellor and PTO. This is important for two or three reasons. It allows for much less heat buildup in the pto. It allows the grease to do it's job, and it allows the non rigid fiberglass hull to flex as it bashes through waves and over rough waters without binding up the driveshaft.

And, BTW, there is no shear pin in a Sea Doo driveline or on the impellor.

Expect it to leave you stranded.

          whats next

OK. So if I replace the driveline before any thing ELSE goes wrong, what driveshaft and PTO can I buy? I have no money..otherwise I would have replaced those things to begin with. I can get the parts on ebay cheap enough- but I cant find the exact part numbers that bombardier's parts list shows for this particular model. Will other driveshafts and PTOs work, or does it have to be the same exact part number? BTW its a 717 engine

Any PTO off of a 657 or 717 will work. Your driveshaft you will need to pull out and measure. Then have the seller measure..
