  • 98 seadoo gs 717 rotax no start

I have a 98 seadoo gs 717 rotax engine and I cant get it to start, I actually bought 2 of the same kind, one starts and the other does not the compression is around 135 and is not no more than 10% of each other, I see that I have spark, tried putting fuel down the throttle body with no luck, the previous owner said it would run for him and idle but did not have any power but I cant even get to start?? Any place to start??

Try putting fuel down the sparkplug holes (just a tad), or use some starting fluid.

If you have good spark, and fuel delivery, my guess would be your timing. Either your flywheel key has sheared, or your rotary valve is way off time.

Spray some starting fluid in, see what happens then, and let us know.

Dont use starter fluid, It does not have lubricating properties and you will score the cylinders. Use WD40 as starting fluid, it has lubricating properties and will ignite. Starter fluid is to dry and a two stroke needs oil mixed with fuel to prevent scoring the cylinders.

ok, i have got some fuel into the spark plug holes and it fired up and ran for a couple of seconds, I tried it a couple more times but cant keep it running. It did sound pretty good when it was running!! Carburetor gummed up? Also i am planning to do away with the oil injection system and mixing my own oil/fuel mixture any ideas on how it needs to be done? Do I just need to pinch off the oil line and what mixture ratio should it be. The best I can remember it seemed that one of the skis inline oil filter did not have as much oil as the other and I didnt want to starve the engine of oil!!

Yup.. Carbs probably need a rebuild (your fuel selector is to the "ON" position right?).

As far as pre-mix... Why? If it works, use it! The oil pumps VERY rarely fail.

(PS - I have been using starting fluid, as well as most other racers for years now with no side effects.. It just needs to be used as a tool, not as a fuel system)

Alright will remove carbs and go thru them and go from there. thanks!! Any cheap place to get a rebuild kit for them?? One of the inline oil filters did not seem to have that much oil in the bottom of it ( the side towards the engine and i took it off (filter) and no oil is coming out of the hose, so figured it was stopped up???

Re: 98 seadoo gs 717 rotax no start

If you have gray fuel lines on the ski ,you should replace them, they break down from the inside and clog the filters in the carbs.

Thanks For The Tip, Do You Replace The Gray Lines With A Different Type Or Use The Same One!!

I use clear or blue transparant line (ebay!).. Get about 25' and you'll be fine.
