  • Problems with 96 xp

I just got a 96 xp 787 that seems super clean. Out of water it runs fine, in water its boggy at 25% throttle. If I can get it over that it takes of but after a few seconds at about half throttle it bogs out and will either turn off or go to idle. I checked compression on both and it reads 145 for both. It has a K&N filter on it but I dont think the Carbs have ever been rebuilt. I checked fuel filter and its clean. Im thinking rebuild/ replace carbs is the answer. Any suggestions?

I think you hit the nail on the head! Those carbs are probably WAY overdue. I bet your inernal carb filters are clogged. Replace the fuel lines while you are at it.

My fuel selector was clogged up also. Might as well do it all while you are at it.

Joe, Read the post from Dentonf250 about what he did on his 98 gts and his fuel issues. Do exactly what he did.

Well with much effort I got the carburetors off. Im pretty sure they have been rebuilt considering a lot of the screws show wearing. The fuel filters in both are pretty gunked up. The screen itself is black. Also the top end needle on one is bent. The actual tip is fine ( no flaring) but the shaft is bent. I was thinking about replacing the carbs all together instead of a rebuild. Any suggestions? Oh also what kit should I use Im not sure, the manual says the carbs are bn40I, what needle and seats too? Thanks!

Don't forget to do the fuel lines as they can be part of the problem. They maybe decaying.

Joe, pull the needle and seats out, the brass assembly pulls out with a needle nose pliers there is a small screw holding a little keeper around it also so remove that first. Flip the needle and seat assembly over after you get it out of the carb and there is a number stamped into the bottom surface, you might need a magnifine glass to see it. number should be 1.5 or 2.0 some thing like that.

I would say rebuild.. What you have is typical for a carb that just need's a little lovin'. It's a lot cheaper to rebuild and replace the N&S with new then buy a NEW set $$$$

Isnt there supposed to be a gasket between the carbs and engine? I could have sworn when I rebuilt my 95 xp it had gaskets.

Yes you should have carb base gaskets between the intake and carb.

Had the same problem with mine. I had to replace the in rectifier the MPEM box, I believe it cost me around 50-60 bucks, took it to the water and it was just fine, ran great. I would try replacing it. I tried everything known to man and that was it. Rebuilt carbs, new fuel lines and filters first thinking it was a fuel problem. But turned out to be electrical. It was weird.

Yhea, but with his carbs and N&S looking like he described, that is a MAJOR problem. if it continues, then the elec tests and advise start.

                          Re: Problems with 96 xp

Ok Guys heres where Im at. Rebuilt carbs replaced all fuel lines and cleaned out fuel selector as well as all other fuel connections ( by the way the selector was really clogged up, thanks for that tip!). Intalled everything and got to the cable to the oil pump and didnt like the spring loaded response I was getting from on the oil pump end. I plan on blocking it off (just ordered plate) but I was thinking for now cant I just plug the incoming oil line going to pump and go premix? I ask becuase I would like to see if carb rebuild and new fuel lines has improved throttle response ( original problem). Thanks again guys.

You can, but don't run it like that for too long, there is a gear system in the rotary valve cover that's driven off the RV shaft, you can brun it up and cause some issues.

But, you can fire her up, put her in the water and see how she runs for a minute or two.

Speaking of Oil, what is a good one to use for premix? I have heard of some oils that keep smoking to a minimum but was curious to what is an overall good oil.
