  • 99 GTX has ashy exhaust and white smoke

    99 GTX RFI 787 Rotax
Recently had jet pump serviced. Replaced plugs, added new oil, and mixed in some STP fuel injector cleaner at start of season. Probably 2-3 hours on the season so far. Had it out today and won't go above 5-10mph while in the water, once on the dock engine starts to pop and backfire around 50%-75% power. Also noticed that the exhaust is putting alot of ashy substance out as well as a little bit of an oily slick. Just started using Mercury QuickSilver PWC oil, which says it meets the API standards for use in Sea Doos. Accidently used some outboard oil last year but don't think thats the problem, drained the tank and refilled it before winterizing. Please HELP!!!

Your problem could be the fuel injector cleaner, It might not burn properly with the oil mixing in, Try draining the tank and use new fuel.Tom SBT tech.

Fuel injector cleaner also acts as a degreaser to some point.. Which is fine in 4-strokes, but will KILL a 2-stroke motor...

You injectors could be clogged, the fuel filter toast, or the motor is done..

Thanks for the insight. Any clues on where to get a fuel filter and how difficult is it to change out?

look for the fuel lines running to a little white clear container. its called a bowl sediment filter. it unscrews and has a filter sock inside. you can replace the seadoo one with a quick silver one that goes on alot of other merc's. it comes with the new flat o ring too, replace that. Dont buy a whole fuel filter assembly it costs more, just get the filter kit # 35-87946Q04. its like six buck's. Also check your internal carb filter for debris.

He's an RFI, so it's not like a normal carb'd version of the ski. The fuel filter is different and part of the pressurized fuel system...

Buy a service manual for that ski.. It will help you in more ways than you know!

The RfI fuel filter is in the bottom of the fuel pick up and is also the fuel pump located in the fuel tank. The replacement part number is 219-700-368. Looks like a small bag filter that snaps on to the pick up. Tom SBT tech.
