  • 1994 gtx still having problems

I was out riding with my friend who has a 1994 gtx. I had a problem with it earlier stalling out and not restarting. I thought I had that problem solved. I replaced the battery and took off the fuel selector valve and cleaned it up. It ran great the next two times out. On Saturday it started up and would not stay running. After it warmed up it would stay running. After we got through the no wake zone he went to open it up and it just bogged down and died. I had just put new plugs in it for him and thought maybe one was bad or maybe a wire came loose. I got it back to shore and removed the plugs. The rear plug was dry and kinda grey in color, the front plug was wet. I put the old plugs back in it. It did not clear up. When it would die it would start right back up. We got her home and put it on a hose to flush it out and it would not idle at the 2800 it normally idles at on the hose it was much less. I pulled the choke out and the idle jumped up. I gave it some fuel but it would just bog. Since he had just fueled up I thought maybe bad gas. We drained the tank and put fresh gas in it but it still is not right. The compression is 150 psi on both. The carbs were allegedly replaced by the previous owner. Some motor work was done to as evidence of the new gaskets. The carbs do look new but I know that does not really mean anything. Any Ideas?

You need to clean the carbs.

Thaks, I cleaned the carbs and the ski runs great. I now hve another question. The fuel filter for the rear carb was clogged shut. I replaced it with new. If we had converted this ski to premix, would we have lost the rear cylinder? Did having it oil injected keep the ski from having any damage. I have a block off kit for my Polaris I was going to install but now I'm unsure if i want to. I'll wait to hear what you guys have to say before I make my final decision. Thanks for all the help.

Probably not... Whatever little fuel was getting through the carbs would have had oil in it, which ould have kept it alive.

Glad to hear that you got it running again. Replace all those fuel lines too, unless you want to have the carbs clog up again. The older fuel lines will start to break down in the inside, causing all the debris to gather in your carb filter.

I replace mine with the clear 1/4" stuff from ebay (fuellineguy i think)..

Thanks for the reply. The stuff in the filter looked like sand. I was assuming that it was the inside of the hoses breaking down. Is the 94 GTX 1/4" line also?

Replace all of the old gray fuel lines if it still has it, that is how the sludge got into the carb. The interior of the fuel lines fall apart and clog up the fuel valves and carbs. Tom SBT tech.
