  • 1995 Seadoo XP DIED!!

I just rebuilt the carbs and took it out today. I was cruising along and it was running awesome!! Then suddenly, at about 3/4 throttle.....the engine died! I tried to restart it and all it was doing was making a clicking noise that was coming from the gray box under the seat. I loaded it up on trailer and got it home immediately and didn't try to run it anymore. I opened up the gray box and everything in it was dry.....I checked due to a little water being in the engine bay. Everything was dry and the clicking noise is coming from the coil ( I think ) it is the point where the battery terminal connects inside the grey box. It is not turning over just clicking....makes the sound like a car with a dead battery. The battery is only a couple months old and it is suppose to be the one year battery. My father in law took it home to put it on charge for overnight, I didn't have a meter to check the voltage level.

My question is........will a dead battery cause the engine just to die like it did or is it possible anything else?? Also what can I check to make sure the battery is charging while the ski is running? This is my first ski I have owned and I don't know too much about them, although I have been riding dirtbikes for about 25 years and doing the work on them myself, so I know about engines, 2 and 4 stroke, just not familiar on how the battery charges on the skis.

Thanks in advance for the help!!!!!!!!

It almost sounds like the engine seized as you were riding, and now the starter is just engaging, but it can't turn the engine over. Can you turn the engine over by hand? (rotate the output shaft of the engine)

Weird...maybe the stator is pooched. Hard to say man, sorry I can't be more help. Maybe Tom (SBT tech) will have a better suggestion...

Sounds like a few things could be the culprit..

          1) battery toast, not charged.. Try a charged of new battery..no go? go to #2.. If the new battery did the trick, skip to #3 and 4
          2) Starter toast - Open the electrical box and you will see the starter solenoid. Jump the two posts with a screwdriver and see if the starter engages. If the starter engages, replace that solenoid. If the starter does not engage (but you still get a good arc from the jump), then replace the starter.
          3) Check all grounds!!
          4) If the fully charged battery makes it good again, then you have an issue with your rectifier. That's the unit that charges the battery while the ski is running. Without it, the battery will die and at 11.5v the ski will no longer allow spark. Replace the rectifier (square box with yellowish potting compound, and yellow wires coming out of it).

If the rectifier is going bad? could it cause my ski to seems not to have power off idle then it seems to "take off". I rebuilt the carbs...that didn't fix it. The last time I had it out it did that a couple times then the brand new battery was dead. It had 8.5 volts still in it when I got home.

              Re: 1995 Seadoo XP DIED!!

ok.......the motor turns over by hand....took the front cover off and there is a big gear looking thing that is white (excuse my explanation) and i can turn it by hand and put my finger on the plug holes and feel the compression strokes from the piston.....i charged the battery fully and still clicking.....i jump the solenoid and it sounds like the starter is winding up and about ready for liftoff but not engaging the motor.....so I am guessing it may be the starter??????????????

              any suggestions?????

              Thanks,

Yep you need a startor/bendix but in sea doo of that year both are in one or to say that the bendinx is part of the starter unlike other brand that have seperate starter and bendix

                  Ok here is the situation......

                  so far I have
                  1) replaced the starter
                  2) made sure I have a fully charged battery
                  3) turn the gear in front by hand and feel the compression on the pistons
                  4) took jet nozzle and propellor off at back and can turn drive shaft by hand and feel the compression on the pistons

and it is still clicking at the solenoid. If I jump the solenoid with a screwdriver nothing happens at all, but when I press the start/stop button all it does is still click.........................what next?????? float it to the middle of the lake and shoot it???

Replace the wire that feeds the starter from the solenoid.
