  • how to tell if crank seals are bad?

bought a 99 gsx rfi with 787 engine. got screwed when the guy told me it needed a tune up and the rear cylinder was toast. but thats another story. so someone had welded on the jugs so i couldnt use them for a core exchange. water jacket full of sand so it overheated and blew rear cylinder. they rode for a whle like that. i sent top end out for rebuild and resleeve. they went .030 over and i am waiting for it to come back. we didnt split the bottom end. flushed out good got the grit out. rotate crank by hand and feels pretty good, but i hear a little squeek. sounds like rubber, im sure its the seals. my mach. says he is kind of worried about the seals. i can replace crank for 275.00 but i hate 2 waste the money if this ones ok. how do i know if the crank seals are ok. we used brake parts cleaner to clean out the grit. i know thats not good for rubber seals but we didnt drench it.

Have your mechanic (or a reputable dealer) perform a case pressure test on it.. That will determine how the seals are doing.

right now it has no top end on it. but i dont want to tare down the bottom if i dont have to. before we tore it down it was running. the plug would come out wet. is that normal? i hear people say "plug is coated" does that mean wet or soaked? or should it be dry when you get done running it?
