  • 98 gtxl bogging

I have a 98 GTXL that I damaged last year by charging the battery while connected to the ski. The boat was in saltwater at the time, so it sat without being flushed until I was able to make repairs. I found the charging coil to be smoked inside the stator housing and replaced it. I also found the cooling ports in the head to be clogged from sitting, and a broken spring on the water regulator valve. All have been replaced/repaired and the engine cranks and idles fine. However, when it is on the water, it will not rev over about 4500 rpm...it will not plane off. Any ideas?

I bought a set of carbs from a dealer in Calif. who said that the carbs were rebuilt.

What are the H&L speed screws set to?

Did you put the stator back on in the right position?

Is the flywheel on the key correctly?

What's the compression of the cyls now?

        How old is the fuel?

I would assume he never removed the flywheel so the key is good and a 947 stator is in one fixed position on the mag cover.
4500 rpm is a bit too low for a stuck rave valve or a bad water regulator, but those do need to both be working correctly too.
How is the compression and what do the sparkplugs look like ? All wet and black with unburnt fuel ?
          Are the reeds good ?
