  • Unusual Noise from 2002 GTX-4TEC

Howdy - have a pair of these skis, and love'em. I have recently notice that one is making quite a pronounced "whirl" type sound, even when just idling in the water. This sound is not detectable run on dry land on the trailer. It is similar to the sound a supercharged model makes (I have an RXT), only much louder. But only when in the water. Is there some sort of main drive bearing on these craft that either need maintenance, or replacing? I've got app. 150 hours on it, and reluctant to run it anymore until I figure out what's going on.

    Thanks!

Ahhh the whiiiir... Probably your S/C...

Look at the S/C and see if one of the hoses popped off, if so, easy fix!
If not then it may be your S/C clutch washers have shattered (not good, but common!).

with the seat off, start the motor, grab the S/C hose that goes from the S/C to the throttle body (into the motor).. Grab it hard, try and squish it. While you are doing that, rev the motor.. The power of the S/C should expand the hose to where you can't squish it.. If it doesn't do that, it's gonna be a fun project... cause' your S/C is dead..

      2002 had no s/c setup.

It sounds to me like the jet pump, they used that first short shaft pump, not many of them lasted.

Sounds like a pump bearing that is failing.
