  • DOUBLE COIL IGNITION?

i was told by bill o neil once (and cant find the thread )but if i found an electrical system with a double exciter coil on the magneto that it would give my 720 a better timing curve.

my question is, (i found one) but will it do me any good on a stock 96spx w/720, or would it be worth swaping out?

and what all do i have to swap out?

I did not tell you that it gives a better timing curve. I said it provides more spark. It is a more powerful ignition.

You would need an mpem, magneto flywheel and the single ignition coil from the same type system.

n e wayz is it even worth fartin with? and just to make sure im on the right track since my train seems to de-rail quite a bit. the magneto will have two exciter coils one on top of the other right???? and five wires???? correct me if im wrong..............

The answer is Yes and Yes. It is better and it will have two exciters stacked onto it.

If you have a modified motor with higher compression and modified carbs, you will notice the difference. It will burn the fuel much better and you can put more fuel through the motor, which is the key to building horsepower.

            I'm not sure.

I have never tried mismatching ignition parts. All of the 720's I ever changed over, we used all of the other ignition parts in the changeover.

Maybe you don't need an MPEM ? Try the one you have. But I wouldn't be surprized if you needed the other mpem either.

I am having this problem right now, but not by choice. I put an XP engine (well sort of) into an SPX hull, and I have dual exciter magneto, and single exciter electrical box. Does anyone have the necessary pieces for the electrical box. IE: coil, amplifier, and maybe mpem? I also heard that you could keep your old mpem, if you have an aftermarket revlimiter spliced in? If anyone has these parts in south or central florida, I will drive with cash tomorrow.
