  • GTX DI Rebuild

Just got a 2001 GTX DI from a friend (for free.... a good friend :)). Needs a new motor so have SBT for that. My primary concern is that the intake grate is gone and all 4 bolts are broken off. Not concerned about the forward two, but figure a new shoe is needed in back. When looking at the impeller, I can see some pretty good nicks in it and it feels like some gouges in the wear ring. In a effort to get this thing running well and since it will already be apart, should I do an impeller and wear ring while replacing the motor and shoe?? Is a stock impeller OK or is there a better setup??

Replaced the motor in my '98 GTX Limited with a SBT a couple of years ago and it is still running strong. The only difficult part was getting the exhaust out. Will I have the same problem with this one?? It was a bear!! :(

    Thanks!

Yup.. Exhaust will be the same PITA!!!

Definitely do a wear ring and prop, both of those are available through SBT as well!

As far as the intake grate, you have some options. The intake is held on by inserts into the hull as well as the shoe.. Removing the shoe will make you want to take a sawzall to the ski.. Try your best to drill and re-tap those areas... Worse comes to worse, you CAN run the ski just fine with no intake grate on..

Really don't want to replace the shoe but the bolts are broken off inside the inserts and don't think i can get them out?? The front bolts are also broken off but I believe they have nuts on the inside so I think I can avoid having to replace those inserts.

Guess I do a search on how to remove the shoe. We'll see.......

I just had my grate off because the one front bolt was broken, if you double nut the front bolts they will screw right up thru the inside of the ski, on the rear, if you can drill a hole in the middle of the bolt you can drill all the threads out and tap it a larger size, I did, works fine, the other will be a lot harder, use good drills and it's not bad,,,tg :) they sometimes come out good with an ez out,,,good luck

I have read where some will try to replace the inserts in the shoe while others say that you shouldn't as they may fail. Can new shoe inserts be placed?? How??

Thanks again. It would be nice to avoid replacing the shoe......
