  • Replacing Impeller and Wear Ring tips

    I bought a used 97 GSI for a good price (i think) but it needs a new impeller and Wear Ring. They were going to charge me $500 to do this but I have done it myself on a TigerShark in the past. Can you give me some tips on getting them off before I start and what types of tools I might need? and should I stock up on bandaids first?

    You certainly DO need to change the pump cone o-ring whenever you remove the cone. Perhaps you are thinking of the o-ring from the pump to the hull?

      I have had excellent results using teflon pipe dope to seal the tail cone instead of 518.

      The liquid teflon thread seal is actually made for hydraulic fittings and is perfect for oil contact high pressure applications.

      Plus, it has almost no curing time and I've time tested it. Even if you can't get your O-ring to seal or can't replace it, this stuff will get you back in the water.

      Dirs: Remove the o-ring and coat the entire groove with the white goup.. Install the o-ring and smear more around the edge.

      A Bonus is this stuff will not harm the bearings if some manages to work its way into the oil. After all, it is designed to be safe for hydraulic pumps...

        Unlike most other models the seadoos have a reservoir that holds about 3 oz of synthetic oil. Stuff puts off a nasty smell when burned and needs changed every 100 or so hours. You'll need to buy a new o-ring ( 293 300 011). DON'T make any attempt to reuse the old one as getting the cone to reseal without pinching the ring is nearly impossible. You'll need gelseal and 242 blue loc-tite to do the job right and then fill the cone with the bottle of lube. Let the oil "burp" as many times as it needs to. It may take several minutes to fill the cone completely. Take your time , as 1 mistake may cost you your pump housing, shaft bearings and maybe your impeller. Don't loose the bailer o-rings if that model requires them or you risk sinking your boat later.

          you don't need a new oring and they have changed what you put on it is now gasket eliminater loctite 518

            It's complete! I also read where you can put the wear ring in the frezer for a couple of hours to reduce it's size, and it slid right in there! I also bought a solas impeller and installed it for better low end power. When I was checking everything out I noticed that the stator vanes had a chunk out of one of them So I'll end up replacing it this winter, But as of right now that thing jumps right out of the water until it sucks air. But thanks for the replys. I't made everything a lot easier
