  • 2001 GTX Exhaust Removal

OK, I'm not normally uncoordinated but right now I can't get the exhaust out of my 2001 GTX for the life of me!!!! I did it a few years ago on my '98 but now with this one..... stuck!! I began by lifting the engine end up over the motor and trying to rotate the pipe so it is on top of the motor but NO DEAL!! There must be some secret to this...... It gets stuck in the same position every time!

Thanks in advance. If I don't get it out soon, I'm afraid I might take a match to it!! :D

On the GTX, it's REALLLY tough to do without separating the pipe. Most likely you are stuck on the stud on the back of the manifold connection... You did remove that nut, right?

I'll check to see if it is hanging up on anything removable. Is there any problem with splitting the pipe?? Looks like that might be my only choice, short of a chain saw..... :)

      Thanks!

Nope, you can split it... Just be prepared to cuss and kick the ski a lot when you are trying to solve the mystery exhaust leak from the clamp when you put it back together.

Hint: Clean the joint REALLLLLY well and have a person help you mate the pipe back together. Make sure the clamp is on straight. Some people use a little RTV at the connection. Also, MARK the pipe on both halves so you can match the alignment when re-installing. Nothing worse than getting the pipe all connected back together only to find out you need to rotate the lower half a few degrees.

OK great suggestions. If it wasn't for having to wrestle with this pipe, it's not too hard changing out the engine. Hopefully I can get the pipe back together without too much drama. We'll see...... :)

Thanks again for the help. Until next time......

If your changing out the motor, unbolt the rear of the motor and shift / rotate the motor until you can get out the pipe in one piece!

I had to remove the head with the pipe still, attached.it was a foul task.
Keep a cool head and you'll get ur done.
