  • GTI shuts down at higher rpm

My 97 GTI runs great at lower to mid range rpm but as soon as I advance the throttle it starts to accelerate then fades back quickly and even shuts down. Maybe the high speed jet is clogged? Any help is appreciated! Thanks

Clean the carb and if it still happens, then you may have a piston sticking to one of the cylinders at high rpms and will need to pull the head to look for piston contact points in 1 of the cylinders.

Okay - for cleaning the carb do you mean pull it off and clean it by dismantling it or simply spraying some carb cleaner in the throat while it is running?

remove the carb and disassemble to clean thoroughly... pay strict attention to the screws and internal parts orientation...

also check hoses, filters and fuel pump...
