  • 2002 GTX Di - rebuild or exchange engine.

Lost compression in #1 cylinder due to (I believe) the dreaded muskrats chewing through the water intake pipe and then "cooking" the engine on the next two runs. On removing the engine I found that the piston rings had broken, resulting in heavily pitted pistons. The question, is it possible to do a top end rebuild or am I looking at an engine core exchange? Any advice great fully received.

All depends how the crank looks, regardless don’t do a top end without splitting the case, cleaning out inside the case and washing the crank. You will also want to replace the crank seals and reseal the case to verify that everything will hold case pressure so the engine will not run lean.

I am rebuilding a DI, and I would recommend an SBT engine if your budget allows and you love your ski. I am nervous, doing this b/c customer is trying to save money.
