  • NEW SBT 787 Engine Compression Test Questionable Results

I just installed my new SBT 787 motor in my 95 XP 800. Went out to break the motor in today then came back to do a compression test. Mag cylinder tested 120 PSI and PTO cylinder tested 100. So I'm pretty disappointed right now and I'm trying to tell myself that it's just because I used a Harbor Freight compression tester... but I tested each cylinder several times and it gave the same reading each time.

I followed the break in procedure as exactly as I could (read the instructions posted on this website and that's what I did). I mixed SBT break in oil with the gas at a 50 to 1 ratio. I used Sea Doo synthetic oil for the oil injection. During engine installation I tested the oil injection system and it was putting out oil and seemed to be working fine. I tested the oil injection system by turning the oil pump over with a power drill and watching the oil come out of the injectors mounted on the rotary valve cover. Also made sure the pump was primed before use.

So the Sea Doo basically ran fine but it did lose power at the end of the day and bog down at which point I took it in figuring that I clogged the fuel filter again.

UPDATE!!!! Most likely caused by compression rings not being fully seated. Took it out again and it ran fine. Took it home and did a compression test on a warm engine and both cylinders tested 125psi. That was a warm engine after a 30 minute drive home. Probably would have tested higher had the engine been at operating temp. Sorry for the bad press SBT :(
Oh. I also did plug chops just to make sure the air fuel mix was right. Both plugs showed chocolate brown which would indicate a good air fuel mix.

EDIT: Carbs rebuilt last summer by local PWC performance shop (moto tech is great!) and replaced the fuel lines

It would have been a better idea to go through the carbs again before placing the new engine into service. If one of the needles had been sticking it could have run the engine lean and now has damaged the rings, also old fuel, fuel line and blockage in the on/off/reserve vale can also cause lean issues. A good long healthy life for a 2 stroke depends on how well the fuel system is working.

      +1 on the above.
but to add, HB gauges are crap, the other brands are a close second and the only real gauge is Snap On.
Try a different gauge, and go thru the carbs and fuel system again, why chance a fresh engine on last years fix... good luck...

MOst likely the rings weren't seated yet. Continued break in process and they both tested 125 psi on a warm engine. Not even at operating temp. So if it was at operating temp it would have tested higher. Engine seems to be working fine :)
