94 xp backfires

Hey guys

Im new here, but let me say first that reading these forums in the past has really saved me a few times, u guys know your stuff....


so i have a 94 xp with the 657x that died on me a few months ago it was backfiring and eventually didnt start at all. so i got towed back to shore and found a no spark issue.

ended up with a dead stator, so i pulled the motor put another one in with another flywheel, cleaned the carbs, new install gasket set and back in the motor went. spark is amazing now but still backfires so i changed the rectifier. still not solved.

-motor rebuilt 2 seasons ago
-premix setup
-no grey fuel lines
-carbs cleaned
-new rectifier
-new stator and flywheel
-battery also tested

any ideas??

Check for a broken flywheel key

Checked that, it was also new when i put in the stator

see if the rotary valve is still in time and moving.

ok so i got the machine running, the stator was out of alignment, i checked the rotary gear too. it lasted 10 mins on the water and died. got towed back in and found the motor locked right up.

turns out the crank was warped which tore apart my stator and crank bearings. case seems fine but i need a total rebuild and one piston is pitted

what could have warped my crank in the first place?

If a bearing fails on the front or rear the crank it will wobble.
