If I mark the position of my existing rotary valve and do not rotate the engine, can the new rotary valve be installed using the alignment mark from the old valve? I do not see why this would not be ok. Any thoughts?

if thers is a problem with the old rotary valve then you will be putting it back on in the same spot but that spot may be wrong

Rotary valve will not come out of time unless the gear teeth are shot.
