  • 2000 GTI - Oil Pressure Light on After Carb Cleaning

    Hi,

As the title suggests, the oil pressure light is now on after a carb removal and cleaning.

Leading up to it, the seadoo was hard starting after pulling it out of storage over the winter. Following some of the great info on SBT, I removed and cleaned the carb (pretty clean) and replaced most of the grey fuel lines (major ones yes, some of the minor ones to the fuel selector switch not yet).

Now after reassembling everything, seadoo starts pretty good, but the oil pressure light is on. I have read the switches can be unreliable in certain models, but since I had no oil pressure light issues last year prior to storage, I'm thinking that I may have messed something up.

Additional vague bits of info: Up starting, (starts better now), there is smoke so it's receiving some oil to the cylinders. I didn't let it run long, checked the plug to see if it was oily and see some oil. Would guess that it seems less oily than last year (maybe) but can't really tell as plugs were pretty well used and it just may have been accumulation. Looked at the other oil line to the engine (which is clear), seems to be oil in about 3/4 of the line and air in the top quarter from the oil tank. Never really took a good look at this line before so don't know if it is usually like this, or whether it needs some priming or bleeding to get the oil line full.

    Any suggestions very much appreciated.

2 stroke's don't have oil pressure lights, they don't have oil pressure, just oil feed to mix with fuel to lubricate bearings and cylinder walls. Is the oil sending unit in the oil tank that measures the amount of oil in the tank not working? (Oil level like fuel level)

Thanks for clarifying that, I didn't realize that for the two strokes, the warning light on the fuel display guage is warning that the oil level in the oil tank is being read by the sending unit as being "low". From reading through the forums, I had assumed that it was an oil "pressure" light as on later models.

Having said that, the oil level in the tank is half full so not sure why the oil level sending unit is sending a low oil level warning now.

I will try to access the sending unit and see if there is anything that looks out of the ordinary. Any other wires or hoses around the tank or sending unit I should take a look at? I'll check the connections to make sure no wires have been disconnected.

I suppose after that if the light is still on I can try to test with a meter (I'll look for a relevant thread to see how but if there is a link, always much appreciated). If the problem persists, I could try to replace with a different sending unit and see if that fixes it. The only problem with that is that I live in a small town so trouble shooting with a spare can be a pain based on the difficulty and cost of finding a spare to try. Thanks again.

Could just be the oil level float
