• 97 xp killing suddenly for no reason?

i have a 97 xp with a sbt engine just replaced last year still under warrenty well im having a problem with it killing all of a sudden wile driving it does this at random times and some times as soon as it does it the dess beeps twice. It always restarts and runs great untill it dies again. There is no power loss and i changed the lanyard thinking it was that. I also ohmed the post and that was fine. I have disconnected and cleaned and added dielectric grease to all connections and cleaned and retightend battery connections yet i still have the problem. is this metal on the magnets on the flywheel disrupting the signal and killing the engine, and if it is do i need to replace the gasket on the flywheel cover to do it. Also is there a place in minnesota that services sbt motors under warrenty. or will this foid my warrenty if i do this myself.

Thee is no need to open the block, as nothing inside would cause that, so do whatever you need to do.

I would start by opening all your electrical boxes and checking for corrosion and bad connections - it sounds like something is making intermittant contact. I would also open your front flywheel cover and inspect everything as best you can looking for debris stuck to the pickups and magnets.

Being a true Minnestoan who's been stuck in Texas for the past 22 years, I feel for you - I had the same intermittant problem on my 97 SPX back before I had a lean seizure (unrelated, best I can tell). When I took the the eninge down for the SBT replacement, I found a lot of metal shavings from the flywheel that had gotten into the mag pick-up. Although I can't PROVE it, I really think that Tech Support has hit it on the nose - I had checked everything else, and could never find a problem. Pull your flywheel cover and see what you find - and do it soon, I know you've got a short riding season!

Do you know that the service manual says to NOT put dielectric grease directly onto the pins in the amp connectors that plug into the MPEM ?

I too think your problem may be electrical. But, you did clean the internal carb filters when you installed the new motor, didn't you ?

well ive pulled the cover and the pickup was very rusty i cleaned it and the main coil had grease on it and i cleaned that too just wipeing it off with a rag now it is still killing but barely ever i finished a tank of gas and it only killed 4 or 5 times at different throttle possitions do you think i didnt clean the pickup enough or is it to rusty and should be changed unless you have any suggestions. I cleaned the pick up with a paint finishing cloth its sort of like steel wool but its not steel.

I'd look closely at the 6 pin connector in the mag housing for the problem. The pickup, if not broken, usually either works or it doesn't work, unless a soldered connection on the pickup is loose.

Using a mirror. Look closely at the six pins to see if one of them is pushed back into the connector. If you lose contact when riding the ski, it will shut down just like you described.

Of course that applies to all of the connectors throughout the ignition system, including the power supply from the battery. You have a battery powered ignition system in that model SD. Any disruption of the power supply to the ignition, even for a millisecond, will shut the computer off.

i once had the same problem after changing my plugs from br8es to b8es. you must use the resistor type plugs, cause every yime you hit your rev limiter your engine would die in the manner you mentioned!
