  • 717 hard starting

i have a 96 hx (717) which is slow to start. it has a factory pipe with rejet otherwise stock. i have good compression, good gas and good plugs. i allways have to give it a little gas to start and that still takes awhile ( choke does not help). i have turned the idle up and that doesnt help either. i allways have to give it around half throttle to start and than it has to clear its throat before its ok. after that it runs great all day untill you shut it off and try to start it again. could it be cold teperature 70 air 50 water?

Your jetting is probably too fat on the bottom end. What mods are on it and what did you jet to? What pop-off?

all stock except for the factory pipe. i followed there jetting specs 140 main 70 lows 65 gram spring. highs 1/4 turn out lows were 1 1/2 now 1 1/4 turns out. it does seem to me, well i know its at least a little rich on bottom. but will it make that big a difference in starting? i ask because my last ski had a primer and started right up! id think a primer would squirt more gas than having it rich on bottom which i wouldnt think factory pipe would give me jetting specs that far off. maybe im wrong thats why im asking.
