During an endurance race my VTS stopped working. it would move a little if I kept pressing the switch. It started to go out about half way through a 2 hour race. The lake was really rough and my boat was taking a good pounding. This was last weekend and i just checked it and it is working fine. It doesn't have any sign of ever getting water in it. I can't afford to have it go out in Havasu. Should I replace the VTS module and keep this one as a spare? What else should I check before replacing?

I would first check for frayed or loose connections, if you do not find any then maybe I would resort to replacement but not until I found what was causing the intermittent problem

Take the cover off and see if it got some water in it. The boot on the shaft gets cracks in it & lets water in. At first they'll be intermittent then burn up the circuit board. If your lucky and let it dry out it may work again. If it has an electrical burnt smell with the cover off, it's already going.
