New MPEM, DESS programming?

Hi,

I juste got a new MPEM for my blown one on my 96 XP. I'm confused about the DESS. In my repair manual it says that I need to get the new MPEM programmed for my DESS tethers. OK. However it always states that from the factory the ski doesn't have the DESS "turned on," and that once it IS turned on, you can't shut the security feature off. Now, since this is a new MPEM, and is not programmed, shouldn't the DESS feature not be activated on it? Or does it have to do with the DESS tether "mount" on the console of the ski?

The only thing I see in our manuals is the statement that 'when ordering the MPEM through the normal parts channels the DESS circuitry will be activated'. I suspect that unless you are a dealer, you received a unit that is activated.

If you don't activate it, your boat won't start. Once you activate it to your DESS lanyards, you cannot erase the DESS feature.
