  • 96 GSX turns over, but no spark

I tried jump starting my GSX on Saturday with my battery charger at 50amps 12volts. It started up fine, but I had to shut it off quickly to get my flush kit ready. When I went to start it again, it wouldn't start. It turned over fine, but I get no spark from the plugs. Could I have damaged something jump starting it? Please help, I will be going on vacation in a week, and I really need my ski to make it a worthy. Thanks.

You have almost assuredly fried your Rectifier/Regulator module ($35-$45), and probably your MPEM ($200-$400) also. The only safe way to jump start is with a separate battery, or by a vehicle that is NOT running. You should also never charge the battery when both leads are connected to the boat. I know that there are several battery "tenders" out there, but you are always safer by disconnecting one lead, and making sure that there is no possible way for the disconnected lead to make contact with anything. Seadoo says to disconnect Black (-) first, then Red(+). Connecting is red first, then black.

BTW, on the back seat area of the 97 GTX, there is a warning sticker, about this.

NG, there is a connection on the front of the motor that goes into the flywheel cover. Unplug this, let it set for a minute or two then plug it back in. Be careful not to push it into the flywheel just make sure you hold the tabs. You will see what I am talking about when you look at it. This will allow the ski to start as long as you haven't fried anything else.

      Good Luck

I don't understand what unplugging and reconnecting the flywheel harness will do...

ok, so what do I order? Mpem, stator, rectifier, or coil? They can't all be damaged? I also have a 96 xp, can I swap parts to test them, or is there a chance that I can damage those also? Thanks.

The rectifier is the same. The CDI's are the same (the module on the cover side of the box). The staotrs are the same, and so are the coils.

Swap the recifiers first, then the CDI. If it's still a no-go, I would suspect the MPEM.

You *have* tried a differnet battery, right? You can use your car battery with jumper cables, as long as the car is not running.

Bryan, I'm not sure what unplugging the harness does either but this is what worked for me. The motor would crank over but no spark then unplugged and plugged back up and then it started. Didn't understand but hey it worked so why ask why. This is just a suggestion and there were no guarantees.

I would bet that if that worked, you simply had a bad connection at the plug.
