  • Gas tank removal?????

I need to remove my gas tank in order to replace the sending unit and I waswondering how to get it out. I already have the engine out. The manual says to remove the steering system. Is there a way to do it without removing the steering??? If not how hard is it to remove the steering????
    Thanks Chris :D

I have a 96 GSX I replaced this on. The steering is the easiest way to do it. Tank can stay in this way. Good luck!

If it is a GSX, yes, remove the steering. It is very easy to remove the steering and just lay it on the side of the deck.

If it is a GTX, remove the glove box. The cover lifts up to a certain place and just pulls out. The lower portion of the glove box has 4 plastic screws holding it in place. Remove those screws and remove the glove box.

If it is an XP, lift the seat and remove the rubber plug. The sending unit is right under it.

Next time, say 1997 ??? model Sea Doo.

          Re: Gas tank removal?????

Sorry about that, it’s a GSX. It looks like either the engine comes out or the gas tank slides forward and the steering wheel comes out allowing the sending unit to maybe barley come out? Is this right. Are there any fuel lines other than the four that comeout the top of the sending unit that I need to be concerned about, any lines coming out the bottom of the tank?

The only fuel lines are those on the sending unit on top of the tank.

Do not remove the gas tank. Move the sterring head then remove the sending unit from the gas tank. It is a bit of a struggle to get it up and out, but you can do it.

Ok I understand but does the tank need to slide forward in the hull to allow it to come out through the steering wheel

No, not really, sometimes it helps to tip it forward though. ( lift at rear of tank.)

                  Re: Gas tank removal?????

I actually slide the whole assembly forward and managed to get it out. I sliced the unit open fixed the fuse up on the top(it was open) tested by sliding a speaker magnet up and down and now it ranges from 0 to 90 ohms. I am missing the float and the magnet and the bottom cap, i am sure there in the tank but in the event i cant get them out does anyone have the part numbers for the magnet and the float and maybe a location in miami where i can pick this stuff up quick or an internet site that ships relatively quick. So far i have found this info "Per Seadoo's dealer parts pricing guide, they only offers one fuel float kit, part number is 295500438 with a retail price of $8.47" but don't know if this is correct for a 97 gsx,or if it includes the magnet i need.
                  Thanks,
                  Ralph

Yes it is the kit you need and the magnet is part of the float assembly.

You cannot buy a new cap for the end of the tube. If you cannot retrive it from the gas tank, drill some tiny holes in the tube at the bottom and use stainless steel wire to form a web to keep the float in the tube.

Awesome got it fixed, but one little concern when pulling the tank out I accidentally stretched the cables that go inside the top of the oil tank. I also noticed that the exhaust doesn’t smoke much. Are those cables the ones that run the pump or is that just a sensor? I don’t want to ruin the engine if its not getting oil.

One cable runs the throttle linkage on the carbs and a second cable runs the oil pump. Make sure they are both good and the oil pump lever turns when you pull the throttle.
