  • '03 4-Tec Engine Surge

(Sorry to ask so many questions, but it seems that both 'skis are having issues)

Between 4000 and 5000 rpms there is a rythmic surge. You can't detect it in rough water, but when the lake is like glass it is most notable. Idle is perfect, and full throttle you can't feel it. At the 10 hour check the dealer water tested it and he said he didnt notice it.

When I winterized it last fall (out of the water of course), I had trouble holding the rpms at a constant level because of the surge.

I don't know if it is related, but the learning key works aweful - cannot even use it as an emergency backup. The engine sputters and spurts at all throttle settings. I understand it is supposed to retard performance, but it's not drivable under those conditions. The dealer reprogammed the key, but there was no change.

I have heard reports that both issues are common (and "normal"), but I thought I would ask an expert since the folks on this forum seem to be quite knowlegeable.

    TIA

Sounds to me like it is jumping from one timing curve to another at that RPM. Could be a bad ignition module.

Supposedly, the Dealer did a computer scan during the 10 hour check. Would the Dealer's computer hookup detect a bad ignition module?

It will detect and remember communication problems between the ECM & MPEM, short circuits, missfires, component failures, voltages etc. It's real close to what your car remembers. A lot of the codes are the same. If you ask he can print a nifty little service report that shows everything and gives you a record of how things are going or not going. It's extremly good to show problems that have been fixed that don't show up when they get to the shop.
