  • Low end Cavitation RXP

I recently had a problem with low end cavitation on my rxp, sometimes on the holeshot my rpm's would go to 8000 with just the engine reving then it would bite or I could be crusing around 4000 rpm's then punch it and same thing. As a result of this issue I purchased an intake grate hoping that would solve the problem but no such luck same problem. This is only happening on low end, top end still will hit 8000 rpm and 68 on GPS. Any and all idea's would help.

I have 13 hours on the ski, seems like after the 10 hour inspection it all happened (dealer probably threw a wrench in.haaa. j/k). However around the the same time I did have a plastic bag hanging from intake grate which I didn't even notice until I pulled my machine out of the water, is it possible some of the bag went in somewhere and is screwing things up? I have looked from inside the grate and inside the pump and i can't see anything obstrucking the impellor. Any idea's? I was going to pull the pump.

Is this something I should check out or will warranty cover it?

I don't recall if the RXP uses the old carbon seal or if they finally went to a bearing setup. Either way, check your pump and wear ring first, it's very common of the new 4's to have damage at the pump form the lower draft of the ski and tremendous suction of the pump. Read the pump inspection article in the articles section.

carbon seal and carrier may be leaking air.

Progress, when I took off the four nuts that hold the pump housing to the pump support the pump came out very easy, there is a rubber seal that goes between them which was twisted a bit on the top part and wasn't fitting proper which I think was enough to let some air in to cause the cavitation. Now I'll just throw it in the water and test it. Thanks all

Yes that will cause major cavatation.

cavitation is when your prop spins with air in the pump , if you sucked up a bag or sand ect you could have damaged the wearring and or impeller , any damage at all will couse your problem , it would not be coverd under warranty if the prop or wearring is damaged .you should have it checked out or check it your self , look into the back of the pump and up from the bottom into where the prop is . the space should be very thin between the prop and wearring .

IF YOU SUCK UP SOME GRASS INTO THE IMPELLER WOULD THAT GIVE YOU THE SAME SYMPTOMS AS CAVITATION? THE REASON I ASK IS BECAUSE THIS PAST WEEKEND I HOPPED ON MY SKI AFTER MY MOM RODE IT AND IT WOULDNT GO. IT WOULD IDLE AND GO ABOUT 5 MPH BUT SHOOT THE GAS TO IT AND IT WOULD JUST REV UP. SO I PUT IT ON THE TRAILER AND CRAWLED UNDER AND PULLED 2 PIECES OF LONG GRASS OUT OF THE IMPELLER. PUT IT BACK IN THE WATER AND IT TOOK OFF LIKE NOTHING WAS WRONG. IS THIS NORMAL??? I AM NEW TO THESE THINGS AND LEARNING AS I GO SO ANY KNOWLEDGE I LEARN FROM YOU GUYS IS GREATLY APPRECIATED!!! BY THE WAY I HAVE 97 GTI.. THANKS

That's exactly what it is, if its running fine now no need to worry. My Zxi used to get a lot of seaweed jammed in the intake grate which caused the same problem, it was just annoying jumping off the Jetski and reaching under it to pull it all out.
