  • 96 XP VTS question

My VTS recently stopped working in my 96xp. When I press the button to make it trim up or down all that I can hear is a click. I pulled the "VTS" cover off and pulled the motor out. When I pulled this cover off there was no water present. Also the rubber boot was not tore. I bench tested the motor and it works fine. I proceeded to check my fuses up front and all are fine. Are there any suggestions on what I should check out next?

Where is the clicking from? Are any of the gears frozen?

The gears have plenty of grease on them and I can move the nozzle by hand. So mechanically everything appears to be functional. The clicking noise comes from the square box just behind the VTS motor. It has 2 sets of wires coming into it. I planned on taking that out tonight to further inspect.

I believe you need a new VTS module then. Bill might have better info.

Ok guys I figured it out. I traced a couple of wires to the rear electrical box. When I opened that box up there was about 2 inches of water sitting in the bottom. When I pulled the guts out I found a lot of corosion and bad connections. It ended up that the fuse holder for the trim was so coroded a proper connection could not be made. I cleaned that out along with many other connections and the trim worked great. I think my next step will be to buy a new gasket for the rear electrical box. Thanks for your help!

That's wierd, then why did it click when you depressed the trim button? Must have been making some kind of electrical connection.......
