  • Loctite substitutes?

I'm getting supplies together to work on my Speedster and I'm not too confident that I'll be able to find ALL of the different grades of Loctite I'll need. Are there any substitutes for the following...

    271
    515
    242
    PST 592
    518
    598 Ultrablack

This is a very timely question. I will be assembling a 787 next week and am having difficulty getting my hands on the 515 gasket eliminator that my manual says to use on the crankcase and heads. My machinists says that ThreeBond 1211 will work fine on the crankcase (worked great on my Kawasakis) but he is noncommital on the heads.

515 is not used on the heads anyway.

Use 515 on the head o-rings, it's found in almost any auto store, along with Threebond 1211, which is fine for the cases. Permatex The Right Stuff is also a good case sealer.

As for the rest, you need Loctite medium strength threadlocker on all the bolts. The number doesn't matter, it just designates the bottle it's in. Any Loctite Blue bottle is correct.

Since permatex took over locite retail
"Blue loctite" is now Permatex medium strength thread locker blue. (Blue in the name, as well as the color of the tube and the stuff..)

Anybody know what they are calling 515?

BTW, I've never seen any locite product in an auto store other than the small tubes of red
and blue. Maybe thats a regional thing.

Maybe it is a regional thing, or just your area - cause it's all over down here, and I've never had someone with a problem finding it.

The Permatex equivalent is called “anaerobic gasket maker”

Try going to the Permatex web site and search for a dealer/distributor.

btw, the new threadlocker in a stick form is great. It's like a tube of chapstick...just turn it & smear on the threads.
Not sure if it's available retail yet...I got a sample sent thru an industrial supplier, and it's made by Loctite. No mention of Permatex.
