  • 97 GSX no power

We were out riding the other day and it just cut off, like someone had pulled the lanyard off. We pulled the lanyard off, put it back on, no power anywhere, guages blank, no beep, nothing. I rebuilt the starter relay about a month ago and swapped out a shorted out start switch with one from the info center. I pulled the top off the rear electrical box and it was full of water..not good at all. I checked the fuse, still good, bypassed the relay and it turned over. So I pulled the relay off and rebuilt it again, thinking it had corroded in the water. Put it back in, no luck, nothing. Battery juice is good.
I have read some of the other posts similar to this, and have a question, I keep reading about the MPEM, what is that?
Thanks for any help you can give me.

Have you checked all the fuses? The ones on the MPEM and in the rear electrical box? If they are good then check the ground connections to the motor and to the rear electrical box.

MPEM is the electronic module that runs the ski and is located in the front of your ski.

The MPEM is the computer, which it could certainly be - but check your battery cables first - you may even try a new battery.

Its a new battery, I checked to make sure the terminals were connected well, but I'll check again and clean them good as well.
The water problem is recent, we had a good bit of rain and the ski was taking on water, this was just a few weeks ago.
Have not checked all the fuses, just the one at the back electrical box, since I figured it would be the most likely to blow, being under water and all.
        Thanks for the suggestions.

Have you checked the VTS box for water too?
My ski had a problem before I bought it where it lost the ground to the rear electrical box. This comes from the MPEM and I traced the break back to inside the MPEM. As the previous owner had problems with the MPEM I wonder if a short had blown the ground in the MPEM. The ground in my rear box is now a direct feed from the battery and when it was lost the ski was completely dead, no lanyard beep or anything.

Ok, I went and checked the fuses on the MPEM, I guess that's what it was. The 5amp and 7.5amp fuses were blown. Replaced them and the 7.5 blew immediately, the 5amp is still ok. Pulled the lid off the vts, some water came out, but not a lot, there is some corrosion in there though, the vts does not work.
            Thanks, I'll keep chasing wires.

Disconnect the power wires to the VTS. It's a two wire connector. If connected it will blow more fuses.

Look inside the coil box for water too.

Thanks for all the help. It was a combination of bad VTS, water in the rear electrical box, and a bad solenoid. I got her running last night after unpulgging the VTS, replacing the fuses and rebuilding the solenoid again. We have a new solenoid on order, and we aren't worrying about the VTS for now. Now the speedos aren't working though, guess that's my next job.
                Thanks for all the help.
