does charging sealed-maintenance free gel batteries require a special charger, or can i use a regular lead-acid battery charger?

You can use a regular charger. Make sure you only charge at 2amp though. -
Which battery is it ? Odyssey recommends a 10 amp charger.

Straight from the owners manual: "Your Odyssey is shipped from the factory fully chargedand operational. Check the battery voltage and if greater than 12.65 V it can be directly installed. If less than 12.65 V, charge with a MINIMUM 10 amp automotive charger on deep cycle12V if equipped. Make sure the charging voltage never exceeds 15V and current can reduce to near zero amps at the end of charge. Typical boost charge time is two hours or less".
Mine charged in about 30 minutes after sitting unhooked all winter long, and unless somehting goes wrong with my charging system, it will not need it again until next spring when it get de-winterized.
