  • 98 XP limited topend rebuild

Ok, I just tore down my motor to see what was the damage from a 145 front/55 rear compression test was. The front cylinder looks great of course but the rear piston is toast. Not much damage to the cylinder though. My question is this... Should I bore both cylinders oversize or replace the sleeve and piston on the rear only? I own an automotive machine shop so the machine work is not an issue. The crank and rods seem fine. I would also like to know what the side clearance spec is for the rod to crank area. Thanks for any assistance........ Hardee

you should get the CD for your ski , that will give you all the spect info . if your front cly is fine leave it and go one over on the back , you wont hurt anything :)

wait a minute, but if he goes one over on the back and he's standard on the front, there will be a difference right?

I'm going to do both cylinders. How ever slight the difference may be ,there will be some imbalance and I'm not going to take that chance on this boat as it owned by a friend of mine. As my initial question was a question from the cost standpoint. Two oversize piston/ring sets vs one piston, two ring sets and a sleeve, which would be less expensive? Also can anyone give me the link to the piston failure picture reference. I believe this was caused by dirty carb filters because this boat is rarely ridden and and i think it has the sludge buildup in the gas. I'm going through the carbs also to clean and adjust the pop-off pressure. I welcome all feedback.....thanks Hardee

Thanks 1fastski for the info. I'm sure it wouldn't be a big difference and probably wouldn't matter since the two cylinders are inline but the guy who owns the boat is that particular and I just want to make him happy. As far as the CD goes great. Just let me know how much and you can contact me at 1-800-334-0858 btw 8 and 5 et. We are having a hard time hearing on our phone system as it was damaged over the weekend by a lightning strike. thanks again....Hardee

                  Hey Hardee,
I live in Charleston SC. If you need any help, just send me an email. I know of a place where you can get the holes punched out and pick up some pistons, I am sure Christopher can get you some pistons at a good price. I've bought a lot of stuff from him, good guy to deal with. I am sure SBT and watercraftmagic can hook you up too.

Hey 96xper, Thats cool about the hook-up on some parts. I run a machine shop in Columbia and can handle that part but I am shopping around for the parts. If your friend Christopher can give me a call sometime this week, I'll get a list of parts I need and he can get me some prices. My number is 1-800-334-0858 from 8 to 5. Thanks again for the info....Hardee
