• Rotary Valve Replacement: Easier to pull motor?

I'm gettng ready to replace the rotary valve on my '97 SPX and wold like to know if it's easier to just pull the motor.

Some of those bottom bolts look a little difficult to get to and using the timing wheel might be interesting w/ a mirror

    Any advice is appreciated.

I do them in the boat as this is much faster than pulling the motor. The bottom bolts are not too bad to get out. Use a box end wrench.

The clear plastic degree wheel can be used upside down so that when you read the numbers with a mirror, they read correctly.

      Thanks Bill -

Do you recommend the removal of the carbs or is is just as easy to remove the entire intake together?

      Again, thanks,

      Matt

No need to remove the carbs.

          Cool

Beside blocking off the fuel flow is there anything else I need to be concerned about when I remove the carbs the rotary valve cover?

I'm surprised the manual isn't more detailed.

          Thanks,

          Matt

Yes, block the oil line too. You can just use the fuel valve to shut off the gas.
