• Thrust Washer

I bought a ski with a 657X engine that had been rebuilt last summer. It had approx 12 hours on it when it failed. The thrust washer disintegrated and scared the piston and cylinder. It was not flooded and there was appeared to be plenty of oil to the cylinders. The carbs were rebuilt and set to stock settings. The cylinder on the non thrustwasher related side was perfect and the other was good except from what looks damage from the thrust washer. I'm planning on rebuilding this engine myself but am curious what could have caused this and how to eliminate this possibility in the future. Thanks !!!!

Who rebuilt it? Did they use a new or rebuilt crankshaft?

Lots of guys say "rebuilt" when in fact they did a top end job only.

The crank was rebuilt by a reputable company that does specialty engines and crankshafts in general. I think they pressed the thrust washer too tight.

They aren't so "special" then are they?

Yes you are probably right. A tight side clearance will do that.
