  • 96 GSX, 1 leaking rave

On my 96 GSX, the rear Rave Valve is leaking very bad at times, and the
    bellows seems to be overheating.
It actually looks like fresh black oil is pouring out of the side of it.
Even putting a zip tie around the bottom of the bellows has not stopped it
from leaking, and its not leaking from the top. Raves have been cleaned, gaskets and O ring checked.

I have check the waterbox to see if it is corroded, but it looks good, and
    nothing is ratting around inside.

    What could be causing this?
Its an SBT engine with about 50 hours on it.

    Thanks.

You may have a tear - have you taken off the bellows to examine it? We'd be glad to send you a new set, just call in and ask.

Yes, there are no tears in the bellows. I've gone as far as moving the bellows from the non leaking rave to the leaking one, and the same thing happened to this bellows.

If the oring and bellows are in good shape, and the stem of the valve is not excessively worn down in outside dimensions, and the carb is not adjusted too rich for that clyinder, it leaves one thing, the slot in the clyinder may be wornout allowing excessive blow-by. I find this is usually caused by one of the forementioned problems though.

It's possible the cylinder to RAVE valve clearance has opened up beyond tolerance. Remove the RAVE from the assembly and use a feeler gauge to find the clearance between it and the cylinder. I believe 0.024" is the max.

I forgot to mention the inside diameter of the aluminum housing for the rave valve. They sometimes wear out too. Try a new one, along with a new rave valve if all of the other things I mentioned are in good shape, especially the richness of that carb on that clyinder. Also, remove the sparkplug boot and clip back the sparkplug wire and re-install that plug boot. If you are not getting a good connection at the sparkplug, it won't burn alll of the fuel, and it may be pushing raw gas up the shaft.
