  • Stubborn screws inside carbs.

Anyone have any tricks of the tade for removing screws from inside the carbs that have partially stripped heads and are very tight? Will I just have to use a tap and die set and remove them and then replace them or is there another way to get them out without destroying them?

Also one of my high speed mixture screws will not budge and I have tried vice grips and taht will not budge it either, just strips the texture off the sides.

    Thanks,
    Kevin

Use an impact driver to remove the screws. Do not attempt to remove the stuck adjuster or you will be buying a new carbureator. It will break off.

This happened to me when I rebuilt the carb on my 95 gtx. What worked like a charm was to use a dremmel with a small blade and cut a flat-head slot into the stripped screw. Very easy to do without causing any other damage and the screw came out with very little effort. Those aluminum screws strip so easily I just replaced all of them with new ones to save me the frustration next time.

Aluminum screws? It the hundreds of Mikuni carbs I've rebuilt, I have never seen an aluminum screw. Exterior screws are stainless steel, interior screws are hardened steel, and rust like the dickens when exposed to water in the carbs.

The easiest way to remove a stripped screw (usually the 2 jet cover screws get stripped most) is to just drill the screw head off, remove the jet cover and unwind the shank of the screw with pliers. With out the head, the screw just unwinds easily from the carb body..... Usually.

Anybody know where to get allen head screws to replace the phillips head screws that hold the cover on? Changing jets can turn into a nightmare when those screws get hosed.

Allen heads will strip too. The way to do it, is by using an impact driver. Trust me.
