  • Oil Flooded 787 in Challenger 1800

    After nearly 8 months in heated storage, I found the left engine in my 1999 twin Jet Boat loaded with injection oil. The engine wouldn't crank with plugs in so I removed them and blew tons of oil out by repeated cranking. Eventually, I got it started and out on the water where it ran fine after some initial smoking. My question is, why would the oil leak or drain into the engine crankcase during storage? Could there be a leak in the oil pump or is this just one of those things that can happen if the pump stops in just the wrong position? I stored it with the oil tank full - should I instead store it next year almost empty or clamp off the lines to the pumps???

    Any perspectives or similar experiences would be greatly appreciated!

    Your inner crank seals have breached - it happens, although not too frequently. You at least need a new crank.

      Can you give me a little more background?

      I'm not sure how these motors oil but you seem to indicate a serious problem despite the engine running normally otherwise......

        The rotary shaft Sea-Doo engines have a small oil bath in the center, sealed from the two 'normal' sections of the case.

        When the inner seals for that bath breach, usually over weeks of sitting after they have gone bad, the oil will fill the rest of the case.

        The only solution is a new crank, which has the seals as part of it.

          Thanks for the details!

          The next obvious question - what if I do nothing and see what happens - will too much oil cause plug fouling (which didn't ever happen last year) or will the center bearing somehow get starved for oil????

          Any idea about cost for such a repair???

            We have the cranks for $275, and the gaskets will be around $100 for the whole motor, plus your labor or a shop. We have the whole new motor for $799. If you do it yourself, get a Service Manual right away.

            If you do nothing, it may stay as it is for some time, but will eventually only get worse. it ma only leak after a few weeks of sitting, you may go through quite a bit of extra oil and plugs, and have some nice messes to clean up.
