1996 GTI VS 2001 GTS 720

I had a 1996 GTI with a 720 motor and traded it in for a 2001 GTS with the same motor. Both are 3 passenger with Forward Reverse. My problem is this: The 2001 is a dog comparing it with my 96. Is it a weight difference or polution equipment or where the engine is placed or what??? Give me my 96 back.... What can I doo to get my performance back? :D :D

Is there any specific information that you could give us ?

Is the new boat making less maximum rpm ?
Is it cavatating on take-off from a stop?

Was the GTI 720 a twin carb model and the GTI a single carb model?

Anything else that you feel is wrong with the motor or pump ?
