  • GTi performance upgrades

This topic was originally posted by Overkeel2:

I am in the process of pulling my locked up engine from a 96(purchased new 97)Seadoo GTI. Would like to do some simple mods. I am going to buy an engine from SBT. Ihave three kids and the vast majority of the time we either have multiple riders or are pulling someone on a toy. Haved been pleased with performance but would like more top end but don't want to sacrafice pulling power. Is there any such thing. Please help!

If you want to keep your engine warranty, you will probaly want to install a pipe, like Factory Pipe offers, install a good set of air filters, rejet your carbs and then send your impeller to Dave at Impros to have your impeller repitched to use the new power. That should give you a good 5 MPH on the top-end while keeping your bottom end, all for a few hundred $.

      Bryan,
The kit you described will cost right at $1000.00 from WCM.
It will make that GTI run like the GTX 785, but quicker.
Although I do suggest that if the GTI is equipt with the single carb, it be upgraded to the dual carbs, like on the HX or XP. These can be bought used off of the net, or elsewhere for a reasonable amount.

Why does factory pipe not make a pipe for the 97 GTI?

You mean they don't? It would be the same pipe as the pipe for any other 720 runabout. In fact I have one for sale on the "parts for sale" forum at this website.

If Factory Pipe Products chose to not list a pipe for that model, it would be my guess that they did so because they know the pitfalls of using one of their high performance pipes and a single stock carbureator.

I went to their website and was looking at their pipes, and the literature on the 720 pipe says not for 97 GTI.

Sorry should have listed this with last post.Bill what are the pit falls of having an after market pipe with only one carb.Do the other GTI models have duel carb set ups(besides 97).

The pitfalls are poor performance followed by piston siezure.
Many other models use the 720 motor with twin carbs. The FPP system was designed to be used with twin carbs.

If I had a GTI and used it with multiple riders and for towing, the last thing I would put on it would be a FPP exhaust system.

The 720 FPP system is a very high performance exhaust system. It was not made to be the best all-around recreational tow boat exhaust system.

The GTI has a "performance exhaust system", actually from Westcoast Performance Products, when it comes from the factory, new.

For a few hundred dollars, you could buy a set of oem used carbs off of a 720 HX or XP, A Skat Trak Swirl impellor, and have the head mildly milled for a higher compression ratio and 92 octane pump fuel. Leave the oem airbox inplace so you will not crack intake manifolds.

This will give you much better punch out of the hole for towing, and a bit more top speed, without sacrificing all of the reliability of the motor.
