  • Another 720 rebuild question

Ok here's what I got. Looks like classic water ingestion scores on mag piston and cylinder, yes it was flooded when a cooling hose came off. PTO side just has one small score on piston, cylinder good. Both are 1st over. So for so good. When I was pulling it apart I noticed two exhaust bolts sheared off flush in the mag cylinder. I tried to remove the bolts, no luck, broke the easy-outs.

    So the questions are:
    1. I have a spare standard piston. Can I use it and get a new standard mag cylinder and leave the PTO side at 1st over?

    2. Should I re-ring and hone the good piston and cylinder, or just put it back together after cleaning up the small score with sandpaper?

    3. Or I could take the cylinder to the shop and hope they can remove the sheared bolts, bore the cylinder and buy a new 2nd over piston?

Of course I want to keep costs as low as posible. The boat is a 95 XP and only worth what 2 grand at the most, running. If I can get another 50 to 100 hours out of the motor I would be happy. Thanks for your help.

I would not run different size pistons.

I would get a shop to remove the bolts, and go one more size if the damage can't be fine honed out, to stay with 1st over.

So if I bore the mag cyl I have to bore the pto cyl and get a top kit right? Is there any metal treatment need after boring the cyl?

Just a fine hone - standard machine shop stuff.
