I'm installing a driveshaft in my '96 HX. In looking at the fingered couplers and the rubber bushing that fits between them, should they fit all the way together or would 1/4 inch of space on each side of bushing be normal?

It's probably not 1/4 inch, but you are fine....there will be a slight gap.

No Way a quarter inch is fine. That is twice as much gap as the maximum amount . The result will be broken fingers on the driveshaft couplers. If necessary put a spacer inside of the impellor to reduce the gap. Just make sure there is some endplay when you finish. I like 1/16th to 1/8th max endplay.
