  • Rusty Mag flywheel

The motor I ordred from SBT showed up Fri. So I spent Sat. taking stuff off Old one.Found heavy rust on inside of flywheel, looks like there was small plates on top of magnets. This Really isnt something I can just clean up and reuse,Oh its a 1990 587 yellow

You need a stator for a 587 yellow. I think Bill at www.watercraftmagic.com may have laying around - if not give Joe at call here 877 330 0231 and he might have one upstairs cheap.

OH THOSE mognets - I'm sorry, I thought you meant the coils on the stator assembly...unless you can get all the surface rust off and the magnets are still in good shape, you'll need a new flywheel, yes. Follow the same procedure for parts.

He at least needs the flywheel (magneto), he may not need the stator if it isn't damaged.

Where rust builds up between the steel flywheel and the magnets, it squeezes the magnets inward. They will eventually rub on the stator coils when the rust is bad enough. This can damage the stator coils. Check it for damage.

Next thing is getting the correct magneto flywheel. Read the numbers stamped on the flywheel. Should be someting like 7001, or 8430 or some other number like that with 4 digits in large stampings. Make sure you get one with the same numbers.
