• Which hose to clamp for in-water towing?

Stock '97 GTI. Owners maunal absolutely no help- the picture has very little detail and is too dark. If someone can explain which hose I would appreciate it. Is it one of the 2 coming from the top of the motor?

It is the one that comes from the pump fitting.

OK. So is it a black 1/2" line? I want to make absolutely sure about this.

Yes. It is the one on the left side of the head if you are standing behind the ski. It goes to the left side of the pump.

The idea is to stop the water from coming through that line and flooding the exaust system, backing water up through the exhaust and into the motor. Much like if you were to have a garden hose connected and the water turned on without the motor running.

When towing a pwc, the water enters the pump and is compressed as it goes through the reduction outlet of the venturi nozzel which raises the water pressure and pushes the water through the cooling line and into the motor and the exhaust system. As pwc's have watercooled exhaust systems, the water is injected into the headpipe, where if there is no exhaust gases to push it out of the pipe and into the muffler and out the exhaust thru hull fitting, it will run into the clyinder that has the port open when the engine is stopped.

( water cannot really be compressed, but for the sake of an easy explination of this process, I used that term for lack of a better example).

I appreciate the lesson, Bill. On my machine, the "left" line goes from the head to a connection at the stern just inboard and below the line that terminates at the garden hose hookup. So "left" hose is the one to pinch off? Again, I want to be sure .

Tried it today and it towed with no problems.
